A queen isn’t made, she’s born.
I’m not so sure about that.
The Teresa Mendoza we met in Queen of the South Season 1 Episode 1 didn’t look like queen material to me. She was quick on her feet and she survived, but she was also happily reliant on her boyfriend, until it all fell apart.
It’s the way she has responded to the challenges that led to Queen of the South Season 2 Episode 11, that have made her a queen.
I couldn’t believe that Kelly Anne didn’t think twice about having her ID swiped at the convenience store, but Kelly Anne can be hard to figure out.
On the surface, she’s nothing more than a trophy wife, but she could have been, and still could be, so much more…
Kelly Anne: I graduated law school top of my class. I was going somewhere, then I met Cole. I had this dream of us being a power couple. Wasn't long before I realized that all he wanted me for was to smile and look pretty. It's not so easy to do when you're constantly being told how worthless you are. I'm not a survivor, I'm a fool.
Teresa: We're both here because of the men we loved. When I met Guero, I knew who he was. I knew the risks, but I didn't care.
Kelly Anne: Everyone makes mistakes
Teresa: But not everyone survives them. We will.
Perhaps that’s why Teresa feels so protective of Kelly Anne. They’ve come from similar situations. It would be wonderful to see Kelly Anne find her strength in this situation the way that Teresa has, but that might be asking too much.
When Teresa and Camila finally spoke, it didn’t go well.
Wasn’t it just a few days ago that Camila was calling Teresa her partner? Didn’t Teresa just save her life and get her daughter our of harm’s way?
Unfortunately it looks like that was all just part of the game.
Teresa: It's too late, and you need to let me go. I don't want to hurt you, but I will.
Camila: Are you threatening me?
Teresa: You once told me I was a good partner. We were never partners. It's a lie.
Camila: I'm glad you have such a good memory because you remember my words. Remember this, wherever you go, whatever you do, I will hunt you down.
Although i wish things were different, I can’t say Camila turning on Teresa was unexpected. What really hurt was James betrayal.
Teresa really thought that James was being nice when he gave her the video game for Tony, little did she know it had a tracking device inside.
It’s a good thing she had Pote bring Tony to her, or else he would have been a pawn in this deadly game.
Teresa: You think it's a mistake bringing him along.
Pote: The lighter the load, the faster you run.
Teresa: You know Camila would have gone after him to get to me.
Pote: If he slows us down it won't matter because we'll all be dead.
But if James can’t be trusted, Pote has certainly proven himself a surprisingly loyal ally.
Pote has had Teresa’s back for some time now. He’s warned her before about only seeing the bait and not the hook where Camila was concerned, but I’d really love to see a scene where Pote explains exactly why he decided to turn on Camila and back Teresa.
The battle at the cabin was epic. I was thrilled that Val finally realized her boyfriend was only using her and managed to out live him.
When the concussion grenade came down the chimney, I thought Teresa and Alonzo were done, but Teresa’s made it clear that she will fight until her dying breath.
And it was hard not to smirk at her response to Alonzo in this Queen of the South quote…
Alonzo: I'm going to let you go because you saved my life, but you need to know I'll be coming for you.
Teresa: Get in line.
The biggest surprise was that Teresa did give the DEA the paperwork on Camila, but then again, keeping Camila behind bars gives Teresa an advantage.
Are Teresa and Pote heading back to Dallas to take over the business, and is that even possible?
